Love it or hate it, you have to agree that Meetup is HUGE! There are groups on there for everything you can imagine and it’s used in by both businesses, individuals and group/organizations alike.
A basic marketing tip is to focus on what problem you are solving for people – why do they need your services? Heiferman, CEO of Meetup, calls it a puzzle and says to focus on one. I couldn’t agree more. This is one of the hardest concepts for people to grasp, based on my experience. More is NOT better and until you can do one thing really well, it’s not necessarily a great idea to try to add in more services or products.
His second tip is to build for surprise. What an interesting thought. It took me a while to grasp this concept but he’s right. Often times what I thought customers would really want or need, they didn’t, and what I didn’t even think of, they begin to ask for. I’m doing work for business types that never crossed my mind as being a possibility and I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s important to be flexible and, while doing what you love, watch for the signs the universe provides about where you could do more. This leads well into his third tip…
