All websites/blogs need an about page. While this can include information about the site itself, most importantly, it’s shares about you…it lets your visitors know more about you.
You want your about page to really share the essence of who you are, in a personal and engaging way. Over at TwelveSkip, they’ve put together a great list of 17 examples of about pages done right. While the focus is on women, and most of you are indeed women, the concepts are the same for any gender.
I’ve also included a screenshot of mine. For a better view, you can hop over to it live on my site here. I don’t know that mine is a perfect example but I wanted to share it with you along with some of my thoughts around why I did what I did. First, I shared a little summary about who I am and what’s important to me. The images you see on that pages are photos I’ve taken myself and love. The three columns include my strengths, my values and my passions – all things I feel I really want you to know about me and who I am…how I operate. The gray space is filled with my credentials and some history. It’s not that important to me but I know it matters to some plus it is a nice place to keep the information all together. I’ve thought about taking it off or about putting it onto another page with a link but, for now, it’s sits here.
What you include is less important than how you include it. Be sure you share pieces of you that your reader might want to know. Be human…be transparent…be lovable.
If you haven’t put a lot of thought into your about page or it reads like a corporate resume, consider updating it today.
