Is Perfectionism Killing Your Blog?

It takes time to feel comfortable blogging and it takes time to understand all the ins and outs.  One of the most important pieces of blogging is to actually blog.  Are you holding back because someone said your site design wasn’t good?  Or someone said your SEO needed work?  Or someone told you your message wasn’t clear?

These things absolutely matter.   They do. But don’t let them stop you from writing.  Keep writing and work on these pieces at the same time.  Create a list of what needs to be done and start checking it off…while you are writing.  Keep the flow going!

Your site doesn’t have to be perfect.  Perfectionism can kill your dreams…stop you from taking action.  Here are some signs you may be allowing perfectionism to interfere with your writing:

  • You spend more of your time researching and trying to learn about writing than actually writing.  The best teacher is the act of doing.
  • You’re afraid to dive in.  I get it.  I’ve been there.  But the more you do, the more comfortable it gets so dive in today.
  • You’re critical of other writer’s writing.  This is truly a reflection of how critical you are of your own writing. Nothing more and nothing less.  Stop being critical of anyone’s writing and just write.
  • Not knowing when good is enough.  It doesn’t have to be perfect or stellar.  It just has to be good and from the heart.  You can always go back and update a blog post if you want.  It’s not permanent.
  • Your mind is filled with ideas until you actually sit down at your desk to write.  Then you freeze up.  Keep a notebook or something with those ideas so you are ready to go when you sit down.
  • You procrastinate and don’t tend to make your writing a priority.  It has to be a priority or it won’t get done.  My writing has become the first thing I do in the mornings and, if I get the urge during the day, I will likely stop what I’m doing and write.  My writing may not be perfect but it comes from my heart and it is definitely a priority for me.

What will you do today to make sure perfectionism is not getting in your way of your blog or of your life?
