The Perils of a Slow Website

snail on the road

Having a slow website really sucks.  There’s no other way to say it.  It just sucks.

Unfortunately, there are many issues that can cause a slow website and narrowing it down can be a pain in the you-know-what.  There are great tools out there such as Pingdom and GT Metrix but to do anything with your test results requires some knowledge and understanding of code in many cases.  A slow website may also not be your fault or something on your site.  It can be because of a server-related issue (not as common but it does happen) and also because of another site with issues sharing your server.

Here are some reasons your site may be running slow (in addition to the ones listed above)…

  • Un-optimized images
  • Not using a content delivery network
  • Not using a caching plugin
  • Using flash or a slider
  • Not using well-coded themes or plugins – stick to the premiums
  • Login attempts from hackers
  • High traffic
  • Plugins that are constantly scanning a site
  • Plugins, themes and/or wordpress being out of date

These are just a few of the reasons you may find your site running slow.
